The competition for a place in the 23 man England squad between Rickie Lambert and Andy Carroll was admitted by Rickie who is currently playing for Southampton as a striker.
Roy Hodgson who is the head coach of England has less than a month to unveil his 23 man list for those players that will be representing England in the 2014 FIFA World Cup is the man to make the final decision.
Lambert who now enjoy the international popularity after leading a 3-2 victory over England last year in August said that the choice of a central striker in England’s team lies between him and Carroll who after a return from injury in January this year has only netted twice in a total of 12 games.
Lambert is currently with 12 goals that he has scored for saints and says there are four games remaining that can determine their fate. He believes the four games are the opportunities he has to utilize and make more score goals which in turn will increase his selection chances by Roy.
The 32 years old international star rejected the allegation that Jay Rodriguez back to form and optimism that he will be in Roy’s list has increased his selection chances.
Lambert during an interview said that he is vying for the centre position which is not the case for his team mate, Jay whose position of vying is termed wide.
Lambert further said that Jay is still needed at Southampton and believes when he makes a return next season, he will be stronger than before. He said that it was so difficult to accept what happened with Jay but thankful all is going on well.
He said that the timing of jay’s return is the cruelest thing and believes will come back and continue with his scoring at the club.
Lambert however said that his focus now is on Southampton to have it finish the season on a high note and also catch an eye of Roy as far as 2014 FIFA World Cup is concerned.
Lambert believes good performance especially in the remaining part of the season will determine his chances into the England’s squad.
