Southampton defender Luke Shaw is happy to be getting included into Roy Hodgson’s squad

After being named into the England 23 man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Luke Shaw still accepts that it was a surprise calling which he did not expect. The England boss Roy Hodgson named a squad that consisted a majority of young superstars.

Shaw who is only 18 years of age was selected by Hodgson beating out the likes of Ashley Cole. Despite the Southampton defender having a good season at his club he had a lot of fear since his competitor, Cole has a total of 107 caps for England national team.

Shaw therefore knew that his chance into the England squad had already been lost. Ashley Cole is a Chelsea player who finished the season on a high note and announced his retirement from the international matches the night before Hodgson unveiled his 23 man squad with a total of 7 reservist players.

When Shaw was interviewed, he said that he did not at all expect this. He said that by the fact Ashley Cole missing a lot of matches he had some hopes of securing a place into the squad.

However, in the last three matches of the season, Cole was featured in the squad that played and he showcased the best of him. Shaw said that maybe his time had not yet come but came to a shocking news when the England boss named him in the 23 man squad.

He said that it was one of the best feeling ever. Shaw who was together with his family and friends during the unveiling of the list said that they were all proud since despite being very young, his football skilled have been recognised by the England manager.

Southampton football club produced a total of 3 players into the Hodgson’s squad. In a total of 39 appearances, Shaw has had no own goal but with 1 assist goal.

He says that he is not under pressure an all his focus is now on the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He says that his aim is to help his national team as much as he can.
