The 2014 FIFA World Cup is just a couple of days away and Gianluigi Buffon the captain of Italy says that their minimal target is reaching the quarter final of the summer tournament. Italy is he team that clinched the 2006 World Cup title but under the leadership of Cesare Prandelli.
During the 2012 UEFA EURO Championship, Italy finished as the runners up and in the third place during the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.
During a press conference that was held on Thursday, the Italy Captain said that he can’t 100% assure the fans that they will make it to the final or even semifinal stages. He said that the squad in place for the 2014 FIFA World Cup is reliable hence they must win the games that they have to.
He said that they always pull surprises in the matches they are not expected to secure victory. Buffon said that it won’t be bad if they make it to the quarter final stage. Buffon who is the goalkeeper of Juventus says that Italy will have to play smart so as to overcome the best teams that are also participating in the world cup.
When Italy wins the 2014 FIFA World, it will be fifth title. Buffon says that his team is very much mature and has minimal limitations hence an increase in the chances to perform well.
Buffon said that the recognition of how valuable their rivals are is the best thing. He says that the likes of Spain, Brazil, Argentina and Germany are ahead of Italy hence to them they are the available favourites.
He also said that Belgium and France should not at all be underrated as they may make it to the semifinals. Buffon aged 36 has enough experience as far as world cup is concerned. He has been part of Italy squad for the past 4 world cup tournaments with the 2006 victory included.
He says that with the upcoming tournament as his fifth world cup, it is a great achievement though not satisfied. Italy will face Uruguay, England and Costa Rica in group matches.
